 ज्योतिर्लिंग भगवान शिव को समर्पित प्रसिद्ध मंदिर हैं। ऐसा माना जाता है कि इन स्थानों पर वे स्वयं प्रकट हुए थे, इसलिए वे भक्तों के दिलों में एक विशेष स्थान रखते हैं। भारत में कुल 12 ज्योतिर्लिंग हैं।

ज्योतिर्लिंग एक संस्कृत शब्द जिसका अर्थ "प्रकाश स्तंभ" है। "स्तंभ" इस बात का प्रतीक है की इस ज्योति कि कोई शुरुआत या अंत नहीं है।

महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग भारत के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है, और इसे ‘स्वयंभू’ माना जाता है जिसका अर्थ है जो स्वयं उत्पन्न हुआ हो। यही महाकालेश्वर मंदिर का रहस्य है। महाकाल, या भगवान शिव, समय और मृत्यु के भगवान के रूप में जाने जाते हैं क्योंकि संस्कृत शब्द काल "समय" और "मृत्यु" को दर्शाता है।

महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग कहाँ है?

यह भारत के मध्य प्रदेश राज्य के प्राचीन शहर उज्जैन में स्थित है। मंदिर पवित्र शिप्रा नदी के किनारे स्थित है। यहां पूजे जाने वाले शिवलिंग के बारे में कहा जाता है कि

 "आकाशे तारकं लिंगं पाताले हाटकेश्वरम्। भूलोके च महाकालो लिंड्गत्रय नमोस्तु ते"

इसका मतलब यह है कि पृथ्वी पर एकमात्र वैध शिवलिंग महाकालेश्वर है, जैसे पाताल में हटकेश्वर शिवलिंग और आकाश में तारक शिवलिंग है। भारत का सबसे बड़ा मेला कुंभ मेला, महाकालेश्वर जाने का सबसे अच्छा समय है जिसमे शामिल होकर अद्भुत आनंद की प्राप्ति होती है और यह भी ज्ञात होता है की महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग क्यों प्रसिद्ध है।

उज्जैन के बारे में रोचक तथ्य -

• उज्जैन, जिसे उज्जयिनी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, महाभारत काल से पहले से विद्यमान है।
• गुप्त राजवंश के राजा विक्रमादित्य ने इस क्षेत्र पर बहुत लंबे समय तक शासन किया है।
• माना जाता है कि बलराम और सुदामा के साथ, भगवान कृष्ण ने इसी स्थान पर शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी। यहां आप महर्षि सांदीपनि से शिक्षा प्राप्त करते हुए भगवान कृष्ण के चित्रों को देख सकते हैं।
• बड़ी संख्या में मंदिरों के कारण उज्जैन को "मंदिरों के शहर" के रूप में भी जाना जाता है।

महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग कथा -

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार अवंती नामक नगर में वेदप्रिया नाम का एक ब्राह्मण रहता था। वह शिव के सबसे समर्पित अनुयायी में से एक थे। वह प्रतिदिन पार्थिव शिवलिंग बनाकर रुद्र की पूजा करता था। नियमित धार्मिक कर्मकांडों में उनकी विशेष रुचि थी। एक बार, दूषण नाम का एक राक्षस नगर में घुस गया और लोगों को पूजा करने से रोकने लगा। दानव को भगवान ब्रह्मा द्वारा एक अद्वितीय आशीर्वाद प्रदान था। इससे वह और भी आक्रामक हो गया। सभी ने राक्षस की पीड़ा से तंग आकर शिव से सुरक्षा की याचना की।

सबसे पहले भोलेनाथ ने असुर को चेतावनी दी। भयानक दैत्य इससे प्रभावित नहीं हुआ और नगर पर आक्रमण करता रहा। जब भोलेनाथ को क्रोध आया तो वे धरती को खंडित कर, महाकाल के रूप में प्रकट हुए। शिव ने राक्षस पर गरज कर उसे नष्ट कर दिया। ब्राह्मणों ने महादेव से प्रार्थना कर वही रहने को कहा। ब्राह्मणों के अनुरोध के जवाब में, भगवान शिव इस क्षेत्र में महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में निवास करने लगे।

महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग कैसे पहुंचे -

• वायु द्वारा: इंदौर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डा उज्जैन से निकटतम हवाई अड्डा है, और यह इसे मुंबई, कोलकाता, दिल्ली, भोपाल और अहमदाबाद से जोड़ने वाली कई उड़ानें प्रदान करता है। उज्जैन जाने के लिए, इस हवाई अड्डे से सीधे टैक्सी ली जा सकती है।
• रेल द्वारा: उज्जैन रेलवे स्टेशन, शहर के केंद्र से लगभग 1 किमी दूर स्थित है, उज्जैन से निकटतम रेलवे स्टेशन है। मुंबई, दिल्ली और बेंगलुरु जैसे प्रमुख शहरों तक वहां से आसानी से पहुंचा जा सकता है। उज्जैन में अपने गंतव्य तक पहुंचने के लिए आप ट्रेन स्टेशन से रिक्शा, बस और टैक्सी ले सकते हैं।
• सड़क मार्ग से: उज्जैन इंदौर, ग्वालियर, मुंबई, अहमदाबाद आदि जैसे आसपास के शहरों से सड़क मार्ग से अच्छी तरह से जुड़ा हुआ है। यहां अक्सर बसें भी चलती हैं जो आगंतुकों के लिए उज्जैन के आसपास घूमना आसान बनाती हैं।

Jyotirlinga is a Sanskrit word for "light column or pillar." The symbol for "stambha" stands for the concept that there is no beginning or end.

When Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument about who was the supreme god, Lord Shiva appeared as a column of light and asked each one to find the ends. Neither one could succeed. The jyotirlingas are thought to be situated where these columns of light are said to have fallen.

The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India, and it is thought to be swayambhu which means originated on its own. Mahakal, or Lord Shiva, is known as the Lord of Time and Death because the Sanskrit word kaal denotes "time" and "death."

Where is the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga ?

It is located in the ancient city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. The temple is located alongside the holy Shipra River. It is said about the Shivling worshipped here that 

"आकाशे तारकं लिंगं पाताले हाटकेश्वरम्। भूलोके च महाकालो लिंड्गत्रय नमोस्तु ते "

 This means that the only valid shivlings on earth is Mahakaleshwar, just like the Hatkeshwar shivling in Patal, and the Tarak shivling in the sky.

Legend about Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga-

According to the legend, a Brahmin named Ved Priya lived in a city named Avanti. He was Shiva's most devoted follower. Everyday he used to worship Rudra by making parthiv Shivlings. He had special interest in routine religious rituals. Once, a demon by the name of Dushan entered the city and began stopping people from performing acts of worship. The demon had been granted a unique favour by Lord Brahma. He became more terrified as a result. Everyone pleaded for Shiva's protection after witnessing the demon's suffering.

First, Bholenath cautioned him to protect the locals from the demon's terror. The terrible monster was unaffected by this and continued to attack the city. When Bholenath became enraged, he breaks the earth apart and manifested as Mahakal. Shiva roared at the demon, destroying it. Brahmins asked Mahadev to stay here in prayer. In response to the Brahmins' request, Lord Shiva began residing in this area as the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.
